MIJAS Town Council has drawn up a report identifying 4,200 illegally built properties within the municipal boundaries.

The document will be revised at the next council meeting and then sent for approval to the Junta de Andalucia. If approved, it would mean that 80 per cent of illegal homes could be made legal. MijasTown Hall is the first in Malaga province to take such a step.

In the areas of Valtocado, La Atalaya, Entrerrios, Majadilla del Muerto, La Alqueria-El Hornillo, Osunillas, La Alberquilla, El Chaparral and Los Perales Industrial Estate, there are 3,500 homes which could be made legal, the local councillor for Urban Development, Manuel Navarro, said.

If the regional government approves the document, the owners must approach the town hall to legalise their homes and other buildings. This process will be easier if there isn’t a report pending against the home. The rest will depend on modifications to the General Plan for Urban Development which will take place this year.

However, no solution has been found yet for the areas of La Roza, El Rincon del Hinojal and Rancho de la Luz as the plans proposed for them were not accepted by the Junta de Andalucia.
