A new theme park is set for what is now the Mijas racetrack, near La Cala de Mijas
The Costa del Sol racetrack at Mijas is set to become a new dinosaur theme park.
The company Jurapark, which has a similar park in operation in Poland, wants to open the attraction in 18 months time.
The plans were announced by the Mayor of Mijas, Antonio Sánchez, at the FITUR tourism fair in Madrid on Thursday, but he gave few details of the project. He said the plans would be officially presented on Feb 19, and mentioned three possible sites.
However La Opinión de Málaga reports that sources close to the project have said it will be on the site of the current Hippodrome.
Milagros Fernández, from the marketing department of Jurapark, said that the park would be a family attraction as well as containing more educational items. They forecast more than 500,000 visitors in the first year alone.
It’s not clear in reports whether the news means the end of horse racing at the site.
