Taking place from November 17th to 21st is Mijas Food Week, a celebration of Spanish cuisine and the perfect excuse to tickle your taste buds and sample the work of local chefs.

Now in its 18th year, Mijas Food Week features participants from Marbella, Fuengirola and other surrounding resorts, as well as local wineries.

Mijas walker finds body in ditched suitcase

A human skeleton has been found in a suitcase abandoned on a dry river bed in Mijas.

It is thought that the person whose body was found in a suitcase in a dried-up river bed near Mijas earlier this week, may have died around twelve months ago, according to the degree of composition.

Forensic officers ruled out opening the suitcase at the scene in order to preserve any possible forensic evidence, but believe that the victim may have been a fairly large adult judging by the size of some of the bones found nearby.

The remains are now being analysed by Institute of Legal Medicine experts, who are working to establish identity and cause of death.

The gruesome find was made close to the MA-387 road in the Higuerón area of the municipality and forensic scientists are now analysing the remains. They are trying to establish the identity of the victim.

The court on the Mijas Costa has placed reporting restrictions on the case.

MISSING AMY FITZPATRICK

Amy Fitzpatrick disappeared on the evening of New Year’s Day 1st January 2008 at approximately 10pm when she left her friend’s house in the tourist resort of Riviera Del Sol on the Costa del Sol to take the 10 minute walk home.

Amy was 15 at the time of her disappearance; she has black hair, blue eyes and has a pale complexion. She is 1.65m tall and was wearing dark coloured crushed velvet tracksuit bottoms and a black T-shirt with the word “DIESEL” in various different colours when she was last seen. She had no money, phone or passport as she was still on her Mum’s passport. She was wearing her friend’s clothes and carrying a bag of her own dirty clothes.

She turned 16 on the 7th February 2008. On the night Amy disappeared she was babysitting in her friend Ashley’s home. Ashley watched Amy walk away from her door and that was the last time Amy was seen.

Amy is originally from Clare Hall on Dublin’s North side and she moved to The Costa del Sol with her Mam Audrey Her Brother dean and Audrey’s partner Dave four years ago.

Her computer and phone have been checked thoroughly and nothing was found to suggest she has left voluntarily with someone. Amy has numerous sites on social networking sites, e.g. bebo, my space, face book and MSN and none of them have been touched since she went missing.

Amy’s Cousin Beverley has written a song which we are trying to get released for Amy.
Rainbow was written and recorded by Beverley O'Sullivan during her time in pop band Fifth Avenue. When Fifth Avenue's album was released, Amy received a copy from her cousin Beverley and she loved the song Rainbow on the album, mainly because it was her cousin singing it solo and she loved to play it to her friends and tell them it was her cousin!

There are two reasons this song was picked for Amy, The first being that it was her favourite song and also Beverley said that the words (even though it was written 5 years ago) represent all the emotions her aunt Audrey is going through.

Beverley says " I was listening to the song while over in Spain with Audrey a few months ago, and couldn’t believe how each line of the song seems like it’s coming from exactly what Audrey is going through during this very sad time" There are lines like " who said that time was a healer, they can’t be feeling what I’m feeling, I can’t sleep, I can’t eat" And having spent time with Audrey through this I know it’s exactly what she is feeling. So the song is for Amy and also to explain what her poor Mam is going through as well. “I hope that the cd will raise awareness for Amy and also raise funds for forever searching, (who have been a rock to Audrey) and for AMY'S SEARCH FUND. Fire sweeps over Mijas Mountains

A fire is devastating large amounts of forest land behind the Pueblo village of Mijas, Costa del Sol.

The fire started around 7pm on Thursday the 4th September and seems to be spreading down the mountain near to San Anton, Los Osunas and Bueno Vista.

Due to is location fire fighters seem to be not in control situation yet.

The fire can be seen from Calahonda, Riviera del Sol, La Cala de Mijas, Mijas Costa, Fuengirola and Las Lagunas.

The fire could also been seen live from the Mijas Costa Webcam some 7 miles away in La Cala

Update: The fire is still seen to burning at 7am on Friday 5th but has almost been totaly extinguished with only small pockets of fire remaining.

Local police soft the evacuation of over 300 local residents from the Buenavista urbanisation in the town overnight.

The local sports centre at Las Lagunas is being used as a reception centre for the people.

10 fire-fighting units and a team of 70 people continued to work against the flames overnight, while the Mayor of Mijas, Antonio Sánchez, told the press that the fire had been started deliberately.

No news of loss of property or life have been reported.

Lew Hoad Tennis and Padel Tournament

EDWARD DODD was a lover of tennis and spent many happy hours at the Lew Hoad Tennis Club. After his passing on July 30 last year, the family decided to create a tennis tournament in his memory.

This resulted in the first Cudeca Cup which took place on September 11, 2007 - what would have been his 84th birthday - with the grand sum of 2000 euros raised and donated to Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice, where he spent his last days.

This year’s funds are desperately needed to continue our good work and we would like to improve considerably on the previous figure. We are pleased to have the confirmed support of last years sponsors, for which we are very grateful, and are also privileged to have Banco de Halifax, Axa Insurance Co and Norrbam Marketing sponsoring the event too. International schools on the Costa found without correct licenses

The problem has been highlighted by the arrest of the owner of the St Javier's International Nursery in Marbella.
The case of the dangerous conditions at the St Javier’s International Nursery in Marbella, has led the authorities to take a closer look at other international schools in the area, and it’s now thought that at least twelve international schools are operating in the province of Málaga without permission and licenses.
The owner of St Javier’s has been arrested and she has been working there for 12 years without the regional Educational authorities knowing about it.

The Málaga Hoy newspaper says that there are at least a dozen international educational centres on the Costa del Sol which are not authorised. It says most of these are international establishments, in Mijas, Marbella and Estepona, and are operating without the approval of the regional authorities. They are generally nurseries but some teach up to the Bachillerato level.

No interest in the Hotel Byblos auction

Nobody turned up at the auction to sell off the Hotel Byblos Andaluz in Mijas yesterday, and that despite that the reserve price was set at 15.1 million €, estimated to be less than half the hotel’s real value.

The luxury hotel is owned by the troubled Aifos real estate developer and Mijas Ayuntamiento had organised the auction to collect a debt owed to it by the company. Aifos owes 1.2 million to Mijas in IBI and IAE taxes, and also find themselves implicated in the Malaya corruption case in Marbella.

The lack of a buyer now gives Mijas Town Hall the option to sell the hotel to whom they deem fit, and those who are interested in the sale now have six months in which to present their offers.

Calahonda bridge accident report

One of the two seriosly injured is making progress in hospital.

The driver of the crane which hit the pedestrian bridge in Calypso, Calahonda in July 08, leading to the collapse of the structure and resulting in two serious injuries, has said that he does not understand why the bridge came down.

The driver has told the Diario Sur newspaper that he noted a scraping sound as he went under the bridge, with coins on his dashboard rattling as a result, but did not know why the hook of his crane was in a lifted position. He was on his way home after a day’s work and says he was not even travelling at 60 kms/hour.

He asks the question how can such a contact bring down a bridge, and since the accident he has been doubting whether it would have been better if the bridge had fallen on him, rather than the two victims in the following car.

One of the two seriously injured in the Costa del Sol hospital in Marbella, the 47 year old, is now making progress, while the younger man, the 30 year old remains in a serious but stable condition.

THE CLUB LA COSTA SMILE MILE CHARITY RUN

THAT’S what Club La Costa’s charity, The Smile Foundation, is asking members, friends and staff to do this summer.

Wednesday 23rd July is the date set for the first SMILE MILE, set on a circular route of exactly one mile around the Club La Costa resort in Mijas Costa. It’s a charity fun run that anyone can enjoy, whether they want to run or simply walk a mile.

Event organiser and Smile Foundation Committee member Alastair Fitchett explains, “It’s five euros to enter and all proceeds will go towards the completion of the new ADIMI Hospital in Mijas*. It should be a spectacular night of fun for everyone.”

The run starts at 8pm and the official race starter will be none other than UK snooker legend, and star of TV´s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, Willie Thorne.

The five euro entry fee includes a Smile Foundation T-shirt for every participant. There’s no age limit and runners are encouraged to obtain individual sponsorship to help boost the fundraising efforts. The form is available for download on the website at www.clublacosta.com/smilemile.

Smile Foundation President Richard Fletcher says, “The Smile Mile is open to people of all ages, and is a run (or a walk) that can make a difference to so many less privileged children and their families here in southern Spain. While the run may not take long, we hope that everyone will stay to enjoy the various attractions, planned for the whole night.”

As part of the evening’s entertainment there will be a full bar, barbecue and live music. The organisers’ ambitious target is to have at least 1000 runners on the night, made up of guests staying on the resort, members of Club La Costa’s 1300-strong staff, as well as friends, relatives and local people from along the coast. In fact, everyone is welcome and even if they don’t want to run, they can still enjoy the party atmosphere.

1.2 million for street improvements in Mijas

Seven Mayors signed an agreement with the Junta de Andalucía in the offices of Turismo Andaluz yesterday.
The President of the Junta de Andalucía, Manuel Chaves, met yesterday with the Mayors from seven municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol to seal the deal on the new ‘Qualifica’ plan which will see the investment of nearly 11 million € to improve tourism.

The agreement was signed in the offices of Turismo Andaluz with the Mayors of Torremolinos, Marbella, Fuengirola, Benalmádena, Mijas, Manilva and Casares.

The idea is to better promote the Costa del Sol brand, with the Junta putting up 80% of the 11 million € funding.
Estepona will join the plan once the current problems in the municipality have been solved.

Among the projects included, 1.13 million for the redevelopment of Benalmádena pueblo, 1.85 million for the sports marina in Marbella, 1.61 million for the Paseo Marítimo in Torremolinos and 1.2 million for street improvements in Mijas.

Manuel Chaves described the program as a pioneer in innovation
‘We are a world power, and we have to work to affirm and strengthen this position of privilege’, he said.

Missing teen's family in Amber Alert petition

The aunt of a missing Dublin teenager is to present a petition calling for the implementation of a Europe wide ‘Amber Alert’ system.

Christine Kenny, whose niece Amy Fitzpatrick (16) has been missing since January 1st, will deliver the petition to the EU Commission’s office in Dublin today.

A majority of members of the European Parliament have signalled their support for the system, which would involved greater co-operation between countries when a child is reported missing, following a campaign by the parents of Madeline McCann to adopt the system across the EU’s 27 member states.

Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald said today that implementing an EU wide alert system is essential if member states want to effectively tackle the abduction of children in Europe.

Ms McDonald urged French President Nicolas Sarkozy to prioritise the delivery of the system during the current French Presidency of the Union.

Amy Fitzpatrick was last seen leaving a friend’s house where she was babysitting in Calahonda near Mijas in southern Spain.

She lived in Donaghmede on Dublin's northside before she moved to Spain with her mother three years ago.
In April, Spanish police stepped up their search following the reported sighting of clothes Amy was wearing when she went missing. Civil guard teams with tracker dogs and backed by a helicopter combed the area for several days but failed to identify the exact spot where the clothes were believed to have been seen.

Earlier this month, Amy’s mother urged the international media and the Spanish authorities not to drop the case.
Audrey Fitzpatrick gave an interview to Spain’s EFE news agency in which she expressed her hopes that Amy will still be found.

She said she believed her daughter might be with “an older man” and probably left the country by car, despite not having her passport. She is convinced that, even though Amy may originally have “made plans” with the man, she is now being held against her will.

She asked for posters with Amy’s picture not to be taken down in case she might be recognised by people living in Spain or on holidays there. Local reports in Mijas had stated that many posters were being removed because of concerns expressed by the tourist industry.

The US Amber Alert system began in 1996 in Texas following the abduction and murder of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman.

N340 footbridge collapses at Calahonda

Six people were hurt, two of them seriously, when part of a footbridge which goes over the N340 Motorway where it passes through Calypso, Calahonda collapsed this afternoon. The injured parties, one of whom is a child, have been taken to the Costa del Sol Hospital in Marbella.

It looks as if the bridge could have collapsed as a result of a crane lorry having impacted with it as it passed underneath. When the upper part of the bridge fell, it hit a car travelling on the road at which point another car crashed into the back of the first one.

The accident took place at Calypso km 198 of the N340 Motorway at 4:50 p.m. and traffic has not been able to move in either direction since. Sources at the Andalucía 112 emergency service have informed SUR that the fire services and police officers as well as their own personnel are all currently working to relieve the situation.

The accident led to 30 kms tail backs, and complaints that the only other alternative route, the toll AP7 continued to charge for some time before tolls were finally lifted. The road itself was cleared and opened again for traffic at 1130 pm last night, after being closed for some six hours.

Update 08-07-08: Two people are still in hospital with serious face, neck and abdominal injuries as a result of being crushed by the concrete. Another women was suffering from multiple bruising and a couple and their child were given the all clear.

Six months since the disappearance of Amy Fitzpatrick

Her mother Audrey said she was optimistic of finding her daughter alive.
Audrey Fitzpatrick, the mother of the 15 year old Irish girl who vanished from Calahonda, Mijas Costa on January 1 this year, said on Tuesday this week that she was optimistic of finding her daughter alive.

Speaking to the EFE news agency she said that at first the family and the police thought that she had run away, given that she was a teenager living in a place that she did not like, but now that possibility has passed.

Speaking on the six month anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance, Audrey made a fresh call to the media and the authorities to not forget the case and to keep posters and photos on display so that people visiting on holiday could see them.

Costa del Sol marinas under attack in a Greenpeace report

The ecologist group has just published the eighth edition of their report on construction along the Spanish coastline.
Greenpeace has attacked the continued construction of marinas along the Andalucian coastline and named Mijas, Fuengirola and Vélez in their latest report against building along the Spanish coastline.

The updated report ‘Destrucción a toda costa 2008’ was published yesterday and says there has been a notable increase in ‘artificial areas’ in Andalucía.

The report attacks the plans to build a new marina at La Cala de Mijas, given that it is so close to Fuengirola where 650 new berths have just been added. Greenpeace says the La Cala plans, promised by the local Socialists, will damage marine diversity where European, African, Atlantic and Mediterranean species currently coexist.

The report also attacks plans to develop the port at La Caleta in Vélez-Málaga where they claim that specific species are under threat.

Andalucía comes out badly in the new report which also highlights the chemical pollution in Huelva and the Algeciras Bay and the ‘barbaric’ construction of the Algarrobico Hotel in Almería.

La Cala beach gets distinction

LA CALA has again recieved a new Blue Flag, a distinction that recognises the quality of beaches as well as the facilities it offers to visitors.

The Mayor of La Cala, Antonio Sanchez, recently collected the flag to flutter on this extensive beach which preserves the marine environment and combines a series of services for beach-goers such as showers, changing rooms, children’s play ground, first-aid and more.

The council will also set up an area adapted for disabled people, with specific parking bays. The range of leisure activities and sports offered here during the summer, make it one of the best beaches on the coast.

Mijas Town Hall to auction off the Hotel Byblos Andaluz

The Ayuntamiento says it has no option in order to recover a municipal debt to it from the owners of the hotel, Aifos.
Mijas Ayuntamiento is to auction off the five start Hotel Guadalpin Byblos Andaluz to pay for the local hacienda debts that the Aifos real estate company has established. These debts have now amounted to 1,201,356 €, plus interests, and come from unpaid IBI and IAE taxes, as well as plusvalías and rubbish collection charges.

The town hall says the auction has been arranged for July 29th at 11am in the council chamber, after all the other possibilities have been exhausted.

The luxury hotel, visited by many famous people over the years, including Princess Diana, has an estimated value of 39.6 million € according to the ‘Que’ newspaper. Europa Press reports that Aifos has responded to the news by saying it is a form of pressure for them to pay the debt, and they say that finally the auction will not take place.

The Town Hall contends that they have offered the debt be paid by instalments of 65,000 € a month, but this has not been followed either.

Aifos aquired the Hotel Byblos Andaluz in June 2006, with the idea of investing 40 million € in its purchase and modernisation.

Fun day to help little Tomas

Tomas is three-and-a-half years old and was born with cerebral palsy. He is also blind and has been diagnosed with West syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy.

As well as the physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and touch, hearing and speech stimulation sessions he attends every week, Tomas has a variety of medical appointments.

He requires regular EEG tests to monitor his brain activity, as well as appointments with ophthalmologists, neurologists, rehabilitation specialists, speech therapists and audiologists .

A panel assessment classified him as 82 per cent disabled, with the three main areas of concern being his blindness, his lack of balance and co-ordination which prevents him from walking unaided, and his inability to communicate clearly via speech.

Tomas has made great progress over the last year and is now able to walk with the aid of a walker, to see objects within one foot on his right side and he is beginning to try and say a few words.

Despite the many obstacles, Tomas wants to learn and is developing in areas that were said to have been hopeless.

He is a happy and positive child and his parents Jon and Jill Leighton constantly seek out other specialist experience, which may help Tomas to reach his full potential. A fun day and race night is being held to raise funds to help this little boy on Saturday June 21, at La Cortijera, in La Cala de Mijas (near to Streets of London and Tex Mex Restaurant) starting at 3pm.

There will be a bouncy castle, clowns and face painting, an auction by Maurice Boland, live music with the band Monkey Tennis, a member of the Rat Pack will be singing, Irish Dancers, a BBQ and hot dog stall, a tombola, self defence display, raffle for a gallon of whisky, stalls selling items from clothing, homemade cakes and pies to jewellery, a horse racing evening run by the La Cala branch of the Lions’ Club and much more.

Mijas hosts international blues festival

FOLLOWING from last year’s overwhelming success, the 2nd Mijas International Blues Festival will take place this year on Saturday, June 14 in the main square of Mijas pueblo.

The event starts at 3pm and continues until approximately 2am the following morning. There will be bands from Spain and UK and star performances from the United States, Mud Morganfield and Peaches Staten.

All the bands will be present at a preliminary Jam-session at the Mijas Hotel on Friday, June 13, from 9pm.

Interclub day at La Cala Golf Resort

Eight clubs from across Andalucía contested the annual interclub day in early June at La Cala Golf Resort, Mijas Costa. The teams were comprised of four fourballs and the team score was the total of their stableford results.

The eventual winners were Desert Springs from Almería who beat the home club into second place with Guadalmina third.

The Desert Springs victory was all the more impressive as the team had only played one practice round on the course, Campo Asia, the day before the event. Other clubs that played for the first time this year include Antequera and Novo Sancti Petri.

The interclub day was introduced to offer clubs the opportunity to play free of charge in a team format at the resort, which is Spain’s biggest. There was an extremely positive reaction from the participants with most planning to return next year.

Jewellery theft in La Cala Golf Resort

Jewellery worth 400,000 € has been stolen from a property owned by a British family in La Cala Golf Resort. The family had gone out to the beach for time and discovered the theft when they returned home, according to the Diario Sur newspaper.

The thieves took rings, watches, necklaces and other jewellery valued at 395,000 €.
It happened last Thursday, and paper says the family has been so
affected by the theft that they are now considering selling up their home in the La Cala Cala Golf Urbanisation in Mijas Costa.

The Guardia Civil say they have opened a full investigation.

Calahonda brothel that became a Norwegian church

It has been a monastery, police-station, prison, restaurant and nightclub, and the main building of a major farm. It is claimed that it has even been a brothel.

Located in Calahonda, Mijas Costa, El Campanario is, today, as far from a brothel as one can possibly be. It is, in fact, a church, The Norwegian Seamans’ church on the Costa del Sol. It is also a guesthouse with 12 en suite rooms, and a fully equipped conference centre, with a capacity for 35 people.

Opened five years ago, it is considered the ‘best seamans’ church in the world’, by its users. The congregation amounts to about 20,000 Norwegian residents.

“We cover the whole coast, from Nerja to Algarve in Portugal,” says Steinar Lindvig, the resident priest.

We visited El Campanario one Saturday afternoon in May. More than 50 guests were sitting by the tables in the patio, eating rice-porridge and drinking juice. Eating porridge on a Saturday has become a tradition in Norwegian seaman-churches all over the world. It is, in a way, a trade- mark for the church, together with wafers with jam.

Johan Offerdal, who, together with his wife Inger Marie is in charge of the cafeteria, told us that last year, they served more than 3,000 portions of porridge. But they do not only serve wafers and porridge in the cafeteria.

In the upstairs library, one can find a variety of books, both in Norwegian and English. It is free to borrow books. You just sign it out when you borrow it, and sign it in when it is given back.

El Campanario dates back to the end of the 15th century. It is said that the building that houses the church, was built in 1575. The rest of the horse-shoe-shaped building was built a few hundred years later.

When the church purchased the place for the amount of 1.8 million euros, it was about to fall apart.

“We had to spend another 1.8 million euros to put it into the shape it is today,” says Steinar Lindvig. “But it seems to have been a good investment.”

The Norwegian Seaman church is part of the Protestant church of Norway. It has 32 churches in 16 countries in addition to an ambulating service.

This summer El Campanario will host the Calahonda Baptist church, from now until the end of August. They have services every Sunday.

Seamans’ priest Steinar Lindvig stresses that, even if it is a Norwegian church, it is open to guests from all nations.

Mijas Racecourse gets council concessions

THE Tourism Resources department of Mijas Council and ‘Carrera’ entertainment company recently signed a concession for Mijas Racecourse.

The council has paid 222,000 euros owing to personnel and part of the Social Security debt incurred.

The full Social Security debt amounts to 687,000 euros, of which the council has assumed 351,000 euros. The remaining amount will be settled within 90 days.

The mayor of Mijas, Antonio Sanchez, has announced that terms and conditions of tender will be published and tenders invited shortly.

The council will take on 25 workers and six will remain employees of the ‘Carrera’ company, in order to deal with the internal betting system.

Racecourses are not generally considered to be profitable enterprises and the fact that ‘Carrera’ has managed to run the Mijas Racecourse for five years, without resorting to council funding, is an achievement in itself. Other racecourses in Spain are either partially or fully financed by local governments and, in some cases, with the help of ‘Loterias y Apuestas del Estado’, (the State-run lottery and betting agency.)

‘Carrera’ has run the racecourse in times when horse-racing has not been enjoying great popularity in Spain and is even in danger of disappearing. The company has maintained the facilities in good condition and has invested in improvements without requiring extra funding.

The challenge is now to find a company with the ability to turn the business into a sporting and tourist attraction, diversifying what the racecourse can provide in order to make it an attractive venue for different types of public attractions.
