Mijas Costa Police crack down on illegal taxis

The Local Police in Mijas have launched a special operation to crack down on unlicensed cars picking up fares. The local economic downturn has been blamed for the increase in pirate cabs operating, especially on residential estates like, La Cala de Mijas and Calahonda, and picking up tourists and foreign residents.

The police work is complicated, however, by the customers using these illegal services claiming that they are friends or relatives of the driver and not fare-paying passengers.

The official taxi drivers maintain that the illegal practice not only affects their incomes but also the rights of the customers. The president of the local taxi association, Jesús Montoya, reminds the general public that the illegal cars and their drivers are not subject to the usual controls and do not have the correct insurance cover.
